Hurricane Maria

Hurricane María struck the island of Puerto Rico on September 20, 2017, causing a humanitarian and ecological disaster that revealed systemic crises and structural inequalities.

In the aftermath of the hurricane, Will prepared teams from the University of Michigan and the University of Notre Dame on a groundbreaking project, partnering to document the crisis both academically and journalistically. They university teams traveled to Puerto Rico to film testimonies from Puerto Ricans from all walks of life, for a nuanced, immersive look at the crisis, and the systemic problems that exacerbated it.

The result is “Listening to Puerto Rico,” a free Teach-Out—modeled after the “Teach-Ins” against the Vietnam War—released by both universities. It’s available for free.

Will and Sean Curtis Patrick also created a short documentary, “Puerto Rico and Hurricane Maria: Searching for Answers.”
